Much has been written about unconscious bias in the workplace. What is it, and how can we measure it? How does this bias effect our lives and our careers? At Textio we measure how the unconscious bias in language impacts hiring outcomes.
Textio is a machine learning platform built on millions of job listings with outcomes about how they performed with real people. By using real outcomes data, Textio finds the patterns that are working in language today to attract more qualified and diverse people. Did you know that the phrases in a job post can change who will even consider applying for the role, or that the amount of bulleted content in a post changes the likelihood that a woman will eventually be hired into the role?
This talk will address some of the research behind analyzing unconscious bias in text and present data that shows how the language we use impacts our lives, the products we make and the teams we work on.

About the Speaker
Charna Parkey lives at the intersection of signal processing and our world. Right now that intersection is on the corner of University St and 3rd in downtown Seattle at Textio where she leads Customer Success Engineering. She holds a BSEET BSCET, MSEE and a EE-PhD in Digital Signal Processing from the University of Central Florida and has 12 years of experience in signal processing engineering. She has written a multitude of technical papers and holds 4 patents in the field.
